Why pre-sorting is essential for strong gloxinia plantlets

THE KEY TO STRONG AND VIGOROUS PLANTS? “AN EFFECTIVE SORTING PROCESS”, ACCORDING TO JOS TEN HAVE, CO-OWNER OF DUTCH NURSERY J&P TEN HAVE. “THIS ACTUALLY BEGINS WITH THE MAIN SUPPLIER OF THE PLANTS. A SUPPLY OF PLANTS THAT HAS BEEN PROPERLY SORTED IS ESSENTIAL FOR OPTIMUM GROWTH AND SALES RESULTS.”

One of the species grown at nursery J&P ten Have is Gloxinia Sonata, a tuberous member of the plant family Gesneriaceae. The plant is popular because of the dense flower heads and the abundance of buds it produces. “Our plantlets are supplied by Microflor, where they are sorted according to size and growing needs from the very early stages”, Jos explains. “This ensures that each plant receives the exact amount of care it requires – which ultimately benefits us as well.”

Uniform growth for gloxinias

“By sorting the plantlets, Microflor helps create a uniform growth pattern for our nursery”, Jos continues. “Their sorting process gives us the best possible start: the plantlets are all uniformly sized and come with the exact same needs in terms of water and light. As a result, we are able to use one single system for watering the plants and caring for them. They also grow at the same rate, which is essential when it comes to meeting market demands.”

“By sorting the plantlets, Microflor gives us the best possible start in growing these plants. It helps create a uniform growth pattern for the gloxinias at our nursery.”

Sustainable nursery production through tailored plant care

The more effective the pre-sorting process, the easier it becomes to establish the exact plant care required. “Smaller plantlets will need less irrigation, for instance. The sorting process helps us determine the exact needs of each plant. As a result, less water and fertiliser is wasted, production losses caused by improper plant care are kept to a minimum, and we can grow plants in an environmentally-friendly and sustainable manner.”

Perfect planning & on-time deliveries

Jos: “Sorting the plantlets ensures that we can supply plenty of large, vigorous plants to our customers on a regular basis. To achieve your sales objectives, it is extremely important to have a proper planning system in place. The process of sorting plantlets – both at our own nursery and at Microflor – allows us to develop a reliable, controllable planning method. Larger plants that grow more rapidly will be
